Pere Sufrin, Pastor of St. Annefs Parish in Thomazeau, advised FoH in October 2009 that the parish was legally given a cassava processing facility in the Cadette area. Cassava, or Manioc is a tuberous plant from which bread and other products can be made
Members of theDevelopment Committee of FoH crafted a proposal to help make the facility operative and created a strategic plan document to support the project. This economic development proposal supports our mission, vision and valuestatement by supporting an opportunity that promotes self sufficiency and a good food source.
One hectare of land has been rented, with intent to double that amount. In collaboration with Pere Suffrin and the Development Committee of FoH, six workers who are operating the facility and 30 local farmers are working together to increase production and processing of Cassava into flour and bread. The farmers will receive loans to buy cassava tubers and will pay those back with profits, which can then be used to include more farmers.
This collaboration of a small microfinance business with FoH is bringing new opportunities to the area. Local employment at the facility along with small loans for farmers to increase production of cassava is benefiting the local economy.
